The human activities to improve on existing materials for industrial or private use or consumption is called manufacturing. It is practiced in more then one industry be it metals, chemical, food, wood, fabrication etc.

Find more information on value stream mapping or companies like manufacturing inc that have implemented manufacturing engineering or went lean with 5S. But they also may have produced just in time like so many other manufacturing firms whose staff learned via engineering courses online even if it only was civil engineering they attended. You can implement lean manufacturing by using value stream maps. This is essential to lean manufacturing.
